The Write Marbles Golden Book Contest!

WIN: A copy of GOLDEN LEGACY: HOW GOLDEN BOOKS WON CHILDREN’S HEARTS, CHANGED PUBLISHING FOREVER, AND BECAME AN AMERICAN ICON ALONG THE WAY by Leonard Marcus.

How to Enter: Guess Leonard Marcus’s favorite Golden Book. Send (mail AT thewritemarbles.com) your guess to us by 31 May or reply to this post. One entry per person, please! Tell us about your favorite Golden Book too!

How it works: The winner will be selected from among all of the correct entries. If there are no correct entries the winner will be selected from all entries received.

At the conclusion of the contest, Leonard Marcus will share the story of how his research for GOLDEN LEGACY led him to meet someone very close to the character in his favorite book.

Picture Writing
 
Win a copy of Picture Writing by Anastasia Suen.
 
Create an imaginary title for a kid's book that would  not likely to see the light of day. (Walter's Pet Wart,  Little William's Toe Jam, or Rhonda Rhino's Nose Job). Send it to us, and your name will be entered  in a draw for a copy of Picture Writing. We'll enter your name twice if you include a brief description of the book!

Over the next few weeks we'll post the titles (and descriptions, if included). The draw will take place Friday, November 30, 2007.

How to enter: Send your polished nonfiction picture book manuscript along with a bibliography listing primary and secondary sources to The Write Marbles ( by 29 December.

How the contest works: The Write Marbles will read and judge every entry and send the top three to Sue Bradford Edwards who will chose the Grand Prize winner. The winners will be announced in early January.

Sue Bradford Edwards began her career as a researcher while still a child. She graduated from interviewing adults (repeatedly asking her parents ‘Why?’) to throwing herself into field research. She sampled a not-so-delicious acorn in an attempt to discover why squirrels ate them, dug in the dirt for discoveries, and eventually progressed to actual archeological digs. She began writing non-fiction articles for children while studying for her master’s degree.   Her writing for children has appeared in Read, Young Equestrian, Ladybug and educational pieces for Harcourt and Riverside Publishing. She has written about children’s writing for Children's Writer, Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market, Book Markets for Children's Writers, Working Writer, and Writers’ Digest and book reviews for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
 
Sue Bradford Edwards teaches Writing Children’s Nonfiction and Memoir Writing for Scribe and Quill. She has served as the RA for SCBWI Missouri.

The What: Win a Rhyming Picture Book Critique

The How: Send us your name with the titles of two of your favorite rhyming picture books. Want to enter twice? Include a seven line poem that begins,“I love…” This does not have to be poetically perfect, just have fun! Let us know if we can post your seven line poem!


The When: Your name will be entered in a draw taking place February 28, 2008. If it’s you, send one of your rhyming picture book manuscripts to us. It will receive a Marbles Critique that includes a critique from Brenda Reeves Sturgis. Check out her site, and her interview!
